West Runton

Everyone loves beaches, right? And us dogs especially: I love getting sand up my nose, barking at the waves rushing over my toes, and wearing myself out running all over the beach. It’s brilliant!

In October mums took me to West Runton beach in Norfolk. Norfolk is blessed with a stunning coastline, with cliffs and sandy beaches – loads of which are dog friendly all year round. West Runton is an unspoilt wide open, sandy beach with rockpools when the tide is out.

When we arrived we parked in the pay & display car park at the top of the sandstone cliffs.

You might know that one of my mums is disabled and uses a mobility scooter to get around. This means that most of the time she can’t get onto beaches as the sand is too soft and she sinks! The best thing about West Runton is that there’s a slipway right down onto the beach and the sand is firm enough for a scooter to drive on the sand. Beware though, the way back up is steep and you may need a push!

Although I am a fairly well-travelled pupper, It was my very first time at the beach. I got to run on the sand and chase these crazy waves with my cat brother. Yes, my feline brother is insane and decided to come with us, although by the end of the day he’d decided that beaches are more of a dog thing. He prefers the woods. But boy did I enjoy it!

The cliffs here are apparently excellent for fossil hunting. Did you know the most complete Steppe Mammoth skeleton ever found was unearthed in the cliffside at West Runton? You can see it in Norwich Castle Museum if you want, but I’m more into the “digging things up” part. I didn’t find any fossils but I did find lots of things to sniff and made lots of new doggy friends.

If my brother had been more in the mood and my mums had more energy, we could have walked all the way to Cromer, although dogs aren’t allowed on that part of the beach between 1st May and 30th September, so it was lucky we went in winter. Cromer is a small seaside town with a Victorian pier, it’s famous for its delicious crab and is often one of the sunniest place in Britain, so it’s a great place to stop for lunch, or a nice cup of tea.

All in all, West Runton is highly recommended by this small dog for a refreshing day out. People might even like it too - especially if you’re into activities like wind surfing, kite surfing, rockpooling and diving on the largest chalk reef in Europe

If I had more toes, I would give it more, but this beach gets 6 out of 6!
